About us

UKELA was established as a registered charity in 1987 and is the UK forum which aims to make better law for the environment and to improve understanding and awareness of environmental law. Our charitable objects include promoting, for the benefit of the public generally, the enhancement and conservation of the environment in the UK and advancing the education of the public in all matters relating to the development, teaching, application and practice of law relating to the environment.

We encourage collaboration between those interested in environmental law, as well as advising and commenting on relevant issues. Most of our funding comes from membership subscriptions, sponsorship and events income. This means that UKELA is both a strongly independent voice and broadly representative of the sector. As a charity UKELA must provide a public benefit from the money it receives.  One of our main aims is to make better law for the environment. Aims

Our Trustees have prepared and adopted a series of strategic plans to guide the work of the Association. These are used to develop an annual work programme, which is regularly monitored and reviewed. A report is then prepared and published each calendar year. The annual report is one of the key matters considered each year at the Annual General Meeting of the Association, held at the annual conference every summer.

As the UK stands at a pivotal moment for environmental law, UKELA remains committed to its mission: making better law for the environment. With a diverse membership of over 2,000 professionals and a strong charitable foundation since 1987, we are proud of our current five-year strategy from 2025 to 2030..

From 2025 to 2030, we will focus on making our work more accessible, strengthening communication, and investing in the tools we need to reach and support the next generation of environmental law professionals.  You can read our Strategic Plan 2025 to 2030.

 

 

Neutrality and Independence

As a charity with a broad and diverse membership, UKELA is committed to acting independently, transparently and in the public interest. Our Neutrality Policy explains how we contribute to legal debate, policy development and professional practice while avoiding political partisanship and managing actual or perceived conflicts of interest.
